UNC Charlotte computer science ranks among nation’s top 60 public university programs
National recognition comes as the College of Computing and Informatics expands degree offerings in artificial intelligence, data science and sports analytics
UNC Charlotte’s undergraduate computer science program ranks among the nation’s top 60 public university programs in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 Best Colleges rankings.
Offered through the College of Computing and Informatics, the program ties for No. 57 among public institutions and ranks third among North Carolina public universities. Overall, it advanced four places to tie for No. 103 nationally.
“Computing is changing how we work, solve problems and serve our communities,” said Bojan Cukic, dean of the College of Computing and Informatics. “Our students need a strong technical foundation and opportunities to apply it. Through research, internships and collaboration with industry, they learn to develop solutions, work across disciplines and adapt as technology evolves.”
The recognition comes as the college expands its undergraduate degree offerings. In addition to Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in computer science, students can pursue bachelor’s degrees in artificial intelligence, data science and sports analytics.
The new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, launched this fall, combines mathematics and computing with AI algorithms and systems, expertise developing AI models and applications and ethical considerations. Students develop technical skills alongside communication and teamwork abilities, preparing them to apply AI across a range of fields.
Charlotte also offers the first Bachelor of Science in Sports Analytics in the Southeast. Launched in fall 2025 through a collaboration between the School of Data Science and the College of Health and Human Services, the program combines data science and machine learning with the study of human performance. Students can connect their learning with opportunities involving collegiate and professional sports organizations.
Across the college, students build on their coursework through undergraduate research, interdisciplinary projects, computing competitions and student organizations. Research opportunities span areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, bioinformatics and cybersecurity.
The college also connects students with employers through capstone projects, corporate networking and internship opportunities. These experiences help students explore career paths, apply their technical skills and build professional relationships before graduation.
The computer science ranking builds on broader recognition for UNC Charlotte, which earned a place among the nation’s top 100 public universities for the fourth consecutive year. The University also ranks among the top 40 National Universities for in-state value, underscoring its commitment to academic quality and affordability.
