CCI Distinguished Speaker Series to host world-renowned biometrics pioneer Anil K. Jain
UNC Charlotte’s College of Computing and Informatics invites students, faculty and community members to an upcoming presentation in the CCI Distinguished Speaker Series featuring renowned biometrics expert Anil K. Jain on October 27.
A Distinguished Professor and the Doug Zongker Endowed Professor at Michigan State University, Jain will deliver a keynote address on the challenges and breakthroughs of deploying biometric technology across massive populations through the lens of his development of Aadhaar, India’s national biometric identification system and the largest of its kind in the world.
Event Details
- Date: October 27
- Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
- Location: Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340GHI
In his keynote address, “Biometric Recognition at Scale: India’s National ID System (Aadhaar),” Jain will delve into the science of automated recognition based on physical and behavioral traits. While biometric systems are already integrated into daily life through smartphone unlocking and airport immigration checkpoints, the technology plays a vital role across law enforcement, homeland security, social welfare fraud prevention, personal data protection and access control. These applications are propelled by rapid advances in sensing, algorithms, computing power and large training datasets.
Jain will tackle critical questions surrounding large-scale deployment, including maintaining recognition accuracy across billions of individuals, mitigating causes of recognition errors and protecting sensitive personal data. Jain will contextualize these challenges through India’s Aadhaar program, which supports roughly 1.48 billion people and executes approximately 100 million biometric authentications each day.
