Dr. Xi “Sunshine” Niu is Associate Professor at the Department of Software and Information Systems, and Director of CCI Honors Program. She also holds a joint appointment at the Department of Business Information Systems & Operations Management (BISOM) at Belk College of Business. 

Dr. Niu’s research is Information Retrieval, Recommender Systems, Data and Text Mining. Her recent research projects include 1) text mining for recommendation models, 2) retrieval-enhanced multi-modal large language models for medical question-answering, and 3) text/data mining in medical domain as well as in other domains. She has been awarded multiple NSF or industry awards.

Dr. Niu has been teaching: 1) ITIS/DSBA 6162 Data Mining (used to be called KDD, Knowledge Discovery from Data) and 2) ITIS/DSBA 6188 Text Mining and Information Retrieval

Dr. Niu has passions about data, text, language, and Large Language Models. Collaborations are welcome.
