PhD Student Joins Nothing But Nets Champions Council

Last November, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology PhD student, Adriano De Bernardi Schneider attended the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene’s (ASTMH) 66th annual meeting. There, he joined the ASTMH Capitol Hill Education Day, where he met with members of Congress to assist in educating them on programs that are leading the fight to defeat malaria and other tropical infectious disease threats. He also met with Alma Adams, the representative of North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District.

Attending ASTMH’s 66th annual meeting opened a door for De Bernardi Schneider. He was paired with undergraduate students that are members of the Nothing But Nets Campaign.

Two months later, De Bernardi Schneider was formally invited to join the Nothing But Nets Champions Council. Nothing But Nets “is a global grassroots campaign to raise awareness, funds and voices to fight malaria.”

As a member of council he represents the Nothing But Nets Campaign and the United Nations Foundation. He also meets with members of Congress to advocate for global health, malaria and continuous funding for the U.S. Global Health Budget.

De Bernardi Schneider was also selected to attend the 2018 Nothing But Nets Leadership Summit Mar. 18-20 in Washington D.C. where he will attend several skills-based master classes, workshops and trainings. He will learn how to become an effective leader and advocate in his community. Members of Congress and their staff will be present as well.

According to the Nothing But Nets Leadership Summit website, “about 6.8 million lives have been saved from malaria through the use of bed nets and other preventative measures.” Our very own, De Bernardi Schneider has become a leader and advocate for a cause that is saving the lives of millions.
