Structural Bioinformatics
Structural Bioinformatics: While biological macromolecules can be described as linear strings based on their sequence, a complete description of how they function and are regulated generally requires more complete structural descriptions. Structural bioinformatics is the subset of bioinformatic efforts related to the archival/retrieval, comparison, and prediction of biological structures. In addition, extraction of mechanistic information from the structures is another key task. At the Bioinformatics Research Center at UNC Charlotte, investigators are working on several of these problems, including: (i.) protein structure prediction, (ii.) nucleic acid secondary structure prediction (especially as related to microarray probe design), (iii.) protein functional site prediction, and (iv.) protein-DNA complex structure prediction.
