About Computer Science
These are exciting times for the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The department is the largest in the College of Computing and Informatics with close to 40 faculty members. It hosts large undergraduate, MS and Ph.D. programs with over 2,000 students. Our enrollments have doubled over the past 6 years and keep growing, as does our reputation for quality education and excellence in research and service.
Computer Science major offers its students insights into some of the most exciting and profound technological underpinnings of the modern society. The undergraduate concentrations offered by the Department include:

The Department of Computer Science also offers 3 minors. The Minor in Data Science is designed for non-Computer Science majors to gain significant exposure to fundamentals of computer science and emerging area of data science, which can provide valuable knowledge and skills for today’s job market. The Minor in Artificial Intelligence is designed for non-Computer Science majors who want to study fundamentals of computer science and artificial intelligence. Many current jobs will be automated in the near future and exposure to artificial intelligence and robotics can provide valuable knowledge and skills for the years to come. The Minor in Software Systems is designed for non-Computer Science majors to have significant exposure in fundamentals of computer science and the classical technical area of software systems.
Our programs attract a diverse set of students from the State of North Carolina and internationally. Upon graduation, almost 80% of our students find employment in Charlotte, NC metropolitan area.
The active research areas in the Department of Computer Science include Algorithms, Big Data Analytics, Biomedical Imaging, Communication Networks, Computer Vision, Data Mining, Haptics, Distributed Systems, Heuristic Search, Image/Video Processing, Intelligent Systems, Interactive Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Knowledge Based Systems, Knowledge Discovery, Machine Learning, Multimedia Databases, Natural Language Processing, Robotics, Scientific and Information Visualization, Soft Computing, Software Engineering, Virtual Reality, Visual Analytics, and Wireless Networks. In 2020, the Department of Computer Science was the university leader in external funding.
